Thanks Ruby, I was about to post a note on the half hour report on rice and prices of rice. Do take a listen on www.cbc.ca/thecurrent (April 7th). Apparently India (one of the larger exporters of rice) has banned all exports and in most rice consuming countries (Phiiphines, Thailand) the prices are up 50%. I only heard this program in passing. I am no expert on agriculture (I am an operating doctor...you know, cut folks open etc) but apparently the major rice growing areas in Salcette (along the coastal belt starting in Arrosim) are fairly contaminated with contaminated ground water from Z^ari as well as the use of fertilizer (perhaps some hero in the agriculture department will comment). Meanwhile I have been talking to folks in the Arossim area (the phone directory is now available online) and a few months ago, most folks did not care to hear about the warming of the earths temperature (you may call it climate change if you will), but after the Easter holidays (there are thunder and lightening during the outdoor church service) a lot of folks are suddenly interested. The effects of this 'warming effect' (this is the opposite of the ice age, the view in some quarters) and the impact on life along the coast is just now sinking in and folks are concerned and asking questions!
And in ending, Goa had its own Al Gore, the climate champion *sic sic*: Wilfred Antao. Unfortunately, his warnings came 20 years early. I cannot get the picture (out of my minds eye) of 'Wilfad' standing by the roadside and explaining how the sea could enter the coastal villages in seconds once the dunes are gone. And guess who removed the dunes? The Department of Industries and Mines and the licenses gone to some key RSS folks with the sand going to cement factories in a neighboring state.
