Ribeiro conferred with Dadabhai Naoroji award   NT Staff Reporter

   His exemplary example of probity in public life has earned the former Mumbai 
commissioner of police, Mr J F Ribeiro the Dadabhai Naoroji Memorial Award for 
2008.
  The award function took place at yesterday evening at the Seth Walchand 
Hirachand Hall, Churchgate, Mumbai.
  The trust gives this award, from time to time, to an Indian who has 
contributed to the advancement of the interests of India in any sphere of 
national life, except politics. Prominent among the awardees are J R D Tata, 
Nani Palkhivala, Mr Ratan Tata, Satyajit Ray, Vijay Merchant, Dr Salim Ali, Dr 
M S Subbulakshmi, Dr Homi Sethna, F C Kohli, Dr R A Mashelkar, Dr S S 
Badrinath, Nandlal Bose, Dr B R Nanda, Dr D S Kothari, A D Gorwafa, H H Seervai 
and Dr V Kurien.
   The present recipient of the award, Mr Ribeiro, who was awarded the Padma 
Bhushan in 1987, was among many things, the Commissioner of Police of Mumbai 
from 1982 to 1985; the director-general, Central Reserve Police; the Union 
special secretary, Home Ministry and post retirement, he was Ambassador to 
Romania from 1989 to 1993.
  Mr Ribeiro is a member of the Union Home Ministers Council for Communal 
Harmony and a member of the Advisory Council of the Central Vigilance 
Commission.
