XVth GOA Rolling Trophy
Navelim stunned, Curtorcares, Fahaheel Brothers, Veterans advance
In the first round matches of the XV edition of Goan Overseas Association
Rolling Trophy, sponsored by Bassem International Trading Company (Charles
D'Sa) and played on 4 April 2008 , CRC Chinchinim, Curtorcares United, Fahaheel
Brothers and Veterans United advanced to the next stage of this prestigious
tournament being played under the auspices of the Kuwait India Football
Federation (KIFF), at the Salmiya Grounds.
The first match of the tournament ended in favour of Curtorcares United as
their opponents, Malayalee Arts Club failed to show up.
In the match on the adjoining ground, Navelim Youth Centre who were expected
to easily overcome CRC Chinchinim, found themselves trailing to a 10th minute
Melwin strike. A move that started on the left flank with Sebys cross, found
James on the fight of the field. The last named controlled the ball and fed
Melwin, who was left unmarked by the wrong footed Navelim defense. Navelim
brought in stalwarts Christino, Sydney and Wilson to assist Duarte , Cruz and
Alleluia to look for the equalizer. The 18th minute of the second half-yielded
results when Christino headed in, off Duarte s right flank cross. After the
end of an uneventful extra time, the Tie Breaker had to be resorted to. With
the scores still tied, the sudden death tie breaker, was used wherein CRC
Chichinim emerged victorious. Scorers for CRC were Joseph, Godwin, Melwin,
Antonio, Valento, Agnel and Seby. Only Savio, Alleluia, John, Duarte , Simao
and Sydney could convert for Navelim
In the third match of the day, Fahaheel Brothers got the better of Bombay
Boys by a brace. After a barren first half, Fahaheel Brothers scored against
the run of play through Abdul Muneer and Mustafa. Bombay Boys who won this
trophy two seasons back and were the runners up for three consecutive seasons,
prior to that, stumbled at the very first hurdle.
Veterans United, edged past new outfit Goan Entertainment Club (GEC) by the
odd goal in three. Cajetan Godinho of Veterans scored a brace on ether side of
the break. The first coming off a cross from Rubin and the second a solo effort
from the edge of the box.
As their name suggest, Veterans gave their opponents a quick lesson in deft
passing and ball control. The score line would have been much wider had the
Veterans forwards converted their chances. Inexplicably, they would not shoot
at goal but seemed content to pass the ball around. Ignatius Martins, managed
to reduce the deficit for GEC, with two minutes remaining, but it was too
little too late.

Don Bosco Oratory vs. United Goans Centre at 6:45 on Ground A,
Santos FC vs. Kuwait Goan Assocaition (KGA) at 6:45 on Ground
B,
Rising Stars vs. AVC at 8:15 on Ground A,
GOA Maroons vs. United Friends at 8:15 on Ground B
The tournament matches are officiated by Indian Football Referees Association
(IFRA).
