Hi All,

It's summertime and the living is easy. That's if you know how to beat the
heat.
It's the season in which the terrible tourists take off, leaving Goa for you
and me to enjoy.
Summer holidays for students. Visiting relatives. Summer Camps.

Here's a look at what makes the temperature rise, best ways to cool off and
where best to head!

Caje's Bhaji - Top 5 ways to beat the heat!

1. Urrack! Nothing cools better than cashew nectar on its way to puberty. (Rs
40/bottle or Rs 600/causo in Verem)
2. Kokum juice. Goa's natural body cooler, best had with lots of crushed ice.
(optional garlic, green chilly, corriander leaves garnish)
3. Raw mango panna (more east indian!). Boil raw mangoes (torr), blend the pulp
with sugar syrup, pour over crushed ice.
4. Local cucumber (Toushem). Best sprinkled with sea salt.
5. Pez. Believe-it-or-not, but good old canji made with par boiled unpolished
rice is very cooling. (Niss is nice!)

Caje's Bhaji - Top 5 things that will make the temperature soar!

1. Garbage disposal and burning of fields before the rains.
2. Property border disputes (Visiting house owners pushing back enroaching
neighbours!)
3. Cabinet re-shuffle (It's not the Alphonso but the Monseratte that is ripe in
the assembly)
4. Water shortage (I often wonder if PWD workers have a stake in water tanker
operations?)
5. Cost of mangoes (This year the crop is bad, but then even when the crop is
good the prices are unaffordable for the "AAM aadmi".

Caje's Bhaji - Top 5 places to hit!

1. Evenings at the beach enjoying the non-stop sea breeze while elders have
their annual salt water dip to ease joint pains.
2. Immersing your whole self in the cool rippling underwater springs (Zor) (My
recent discovery is in Pirna)
3. Kala Academy jetty. (Glorious sunsets)
4. Fish markets (Squids, sardines, leppo and prawn are great value currently)
5. Any bar serving fresh chilled draught beer (I hit Ernesto's and Florentine @
Rs 25/mug)

Nothing however cools better than a glass of water drawn from the well.
That's if the septic tank has not seeped in or the water tankers have not
sucked out the ground water.
The one's that missed closely are:
aadsol (tender coconut water) since that's available all year round;
and watermelons which come from outside Goa and are chemical dyed to look
crimson for display!

The heat is on! Cool off...

Cheers!
Cajetan Vaz
