XVth GOA Rolling Trophy
Goa Maroons, Santos, DBO and AVC in quarterfinals
In the first match of the day Don Bosco Oratory get past United Goans by a
tennis score of six goals to one in very dusty conditions. DBO opened the
scoring through Philip, as early as the 10th minute. Two minutes later Ratan
increased his teams lead. Agnelo of United Goans Centre managed to reduce the
deficit just before half time. The second half saw UGC collapse allowing Roshan
to add the third for DBO and the young and energetic Steven to score a hat
trick to complete the rout.
On the adjoining ground Santos FC playing with 10 men in the first half upset
Kuwait Goan Association via the Tiebreaker. After a barren first half, Andre
put KGA in front in the 8th minute with a rasping shot that beat Santos keeper,
Rosario. Their lead lasted just two minutes with Agnelo bringing Santos back on
level terms, squeezing the ball under Conceicao under the KGA bar. KGA were
unlucky in their attempts as the uprights denied them on three occasions. The
tiebreaker was resorted to after extra time failed to break the deadlock.
Agnelo, Joywin, Seby and Darwin converted for Santos . KGA converted three
tries through Carido, Remedio and Andrew.
AVC Sports survived a late scare by Rising Stars (Paradiso) to secure victory
by the odd goal in three in the third match of the day. AVC took the lead
early in the first half through Savio. Rising Star went all out for the
equalizer but were thwarted by Vincy in the AVC defense. After the change of
ends, Malvy doubled AVC's lead taking advantage of a defensive mix up. With 5
minutes of the match remaining, Aston reduced the deficit giving Rising Stars a
glimmer of hope. AVC held on though, to move to the next round.
In the final match of the day, hosts GOA Maroons edged past holders United
Friends Club by a solitary goal. Goa Maroons took total control of the match
right from the word go, but UFC playing to a sound strategy of defending and
making the odd run into the opposition half managed to frustrate the Maroons
forwards, Reji, Joe and Philip with some strong defending. Goa Maroons Alex
and Augustin in the defense and fleet footed Gaby instrumented raid after raid
into the UFC goal, but were unable to score until a moment of sheer brilliance
by defender Jaime Figueira who latched on to a pass from Cookie to slot home
the winner from just outside the box and ensure a quarter final spot.
