Sarpanch of Rachol VP downplays malaria threat NT Staff Reporter Margao, April 25 The Rachol sarpanch, Mr Guilherme Oliveira today refuted the charges made by the newly elected village panch, Mr Joseph Vaz that Rachol is facing a threat of malaria or typhoid. He said that the primary health centre had not found any samples and no cases have been diagnosed in the village. He said that the village panchayat had recently passed a resolution for a sewage treatment plant for the village and that the process is being monitored by the local MLA, Mr Aleixo Lorenco. This has been a long-pending demand of the villagers that the village get a sewage treatment plant, Mr Oliveira informed. Speaking further, Mr Oliveira said that the village is located on an island, hence the people mostly live in row houses. He said that the panchayat is currently constructing a 10-seater toilet for the villagers. He also said that the process of constructing a multi-purpose hall and a football ground is already in progress and added that the village depends on the government, MLA and MPs for its development as it collects only Rs 29,000 annually as rent. He said that the panchayat has constructed two retaining walls on the banks of the Zuari River to protect the village. The panchayat has also taken up hot mixing of roads and is constructing a new bus stop with funds provided by the South Goa MP, Mr Francisco Sardinha. With regard to tourism, he said that the gram sabha had passed a resolution opposing any kind of tourism in the village because of its ill effects and influence on the youth. The meeting had also opposed the proposed water park project in the area.
