Like many of us on goanet, I had only one occasion to
do battle with him on this forum. That was regarding
the Goan restaurant in Mississauga. I found the owners
rude and their service poor.
Edgar said we should ignore their behaviour and keep
on patronizing the restaurant. I disagreed. He was
joined in the defence by another goanetter, very
active now on this forum, who I will not name.
He was lively but could often go off tangent. He held
strong views. One incident that comes to mind is the
meeting he and I attended where Patricia Pinto, then
Panaji councillor (now sure if she still is)
addressed.
Pinto had come to Montreal for a conference and took
time to visit her sister in Toronto.
He lashed out at her. It was then obviously that they
were related, perhaps cousin, and he said words to the
effect that he has been allegedly cheated of property.
A family quarrel came to light. I then volunteered to
give Edgar a ride back to his place, not far from
where I stayed. He told me lot of stuff.
He was indeed a Goan to the core. He had a good
collection of books. I think he asked me what he
should do with it. I said donate to a library. Many
Goans wanted his books but not for any research but
just to adore their homes.
He felt disgusted with goanet, perhaps because the
admin team was blocking his posts. Don't know if he
quit voluntarily or was taken off the list.
I knew his brother well too as we both were part of
the GOA executive committee. Like Edgar, his brother
Hilary too seemed short-tempered. I remember going to
his house, also in the same neighbourhood as mine,
many times for GOA-related work.
Edgar, like me, was one of the earliest goanetters
from Toronto. He contributed frequently. With his
sharp and critical writing he provoked debate and
anger. It was unlike now what we see on this forum.
Some of his posts enlightened many of us.
I am definitely sure he will provoke St. Peter before
entering heaven. I have no reason he would go
elsewhere.
