Edgar Martins was a bold and at the same time a controversial voice on
goanet of yesteryears as well as a very erudite writer. He was quite a dominant goanetter too. Me think we had
gotten into some serious arguments over one thing or the other, but only
objectively. And to give it to him, he did argue very well and was quite
consistent. I had the opportunity of running into him quite a few time at
Mapusa. He did nurse a grudge or two about our administrative excellence of
our Goa government vis a vis his bungalow at Sucorro as well as the desirability of efficient artisans. I had a mind of accepting his invite to sit in his balcony with a glass of 'feni' with him and enjoy
the scene beyond but never got to make it happen. He was a very angry man
when his Centurion bank account at Mapusa was doctored by some unworthy. He
was also going to let me on the secret of how that bank was used by our
politicians to make extra money by way of heavy deposits and withdrawals.
Last I met him, he was going to settle down in Portugal. Or was it
Toronto???

May his good soul rest in eternal peace.

I am very sad to hear about the passing of Edgar. For
all his strong views and toughness he was generous at
heart, and had a broadness of vision that is not very
common among Goans of his generation. May he reside
happily in the memories of those of us who knew him in
person, or like me, unfortunately, only in cyberspace.

In sympathy,

Santosh

has reported
the death of Edgar Martins. Some of the old timers
would also remember
him as a Goanetter. Even if I disagreed with him
over some issues, he
struck me as being well-read and well-intentioned
too. Like many
expats, he was grappling with the changing reality
within today's Goa,
and specially the gap between hype and ground-level
reality.
