NRI OFFICE TO CONDUCT MIGRATION MONITORING STUDY FOR GOA: EDUARDO Dated : April 2, 2008
The commissioner for NRI Affairs, Shri Eduardo Faleiro has said that the office of NRI Affairs with the centre for Development studies, the Department of Planning and Statistics of the Government of Goa and the Xavier Centre of Historical research will conduct a Goa Migration Monitoring Study. The purpose of the study he said was to collect data on migration from Goa as well as into Goa and analyze its impact on the social and economic situation of our State. The Study will report on the demographic, Social, Economic characteristics of our emigrants, impact of migration on social sectors such as education and health and will contain special reports on the early, women and children left behind. The Study will also address the problems encountered by emigrants in the countries of their destination. A comprehensive survey of households throughout Goa will be conducted to measure the volume of migration and to analyze its Socio- Economic consequences. The Centre for Development Studies is an autonomous Research Centre funded by the Government of India and is based in Kerala. It is one of the foremost Institutes for Development Economics in the country. The Study is expected to be completed within this year. The NRI Commissioner was speaking to media in his Secretariat Chambers at Porvorim today. Shri Faleiro said that his office receive several requests for information about investment opportunities in Goa. The Government of Goa, at our instance, has appointed a nodal officer in the Directorate of Industries to assist NRIs willing to invest in Goa. To provide further facilities to Goan expatriates, we have now decided to establish an overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA) and the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII). Senior Officials of MOIA and of the CII will visit Goa to finalize this arrangement. Shri Faleiro said during his visit to the Gulf countries they received several representations to facilitate air travel between those countries and Goa. Vice Admiral (retd.) John D'Silva, Chairman of out Overseas Employment Agency and Shri U. D. Kamat, Director, NRI were also present.
