Folks,
I don't see what the global food crises has to do with Goa nor do I see what
the global oil crises has to do with Goa. In fact, I am surprised that "global
concerns" are being introduced into a Goa specific forum......

However, since this subject has been introduced, let me say that whenever
political parties and politicians get involved in the prices of foodstuff, it
is the farmers that suffer. In times of bumper crops, the farmers get paid
little for their output and the politicians are no where to be seen. As soon as
farm output becomes limited, the politicians intervene by setting maximum
prices and the profits the farmers can earn. It is real easy for the politician
to mess up with the small farmer. For some reason, the same politicians are no
where to be seen when the prices of mineral ore or industrial output goes up or
down. If they try interfering with the market price of the industrialists, the
politicians lose their jobs.

Lastly, the prices of agricultural input including seeds, fertilizer and
transport are all going up. With restricted prices, both from the politicians
and the buyers (in the west who get set prices for what the farmers harvest),
expect the farmer to be hit real hard. The people making the real money in this
situation are always the speculators and traders in grains and staples. After
all, they are not going to let some traditional farmer make more money than a
commodities expert, are they?
