This morning I woke up to a flurry of phone calls, almost all from people I have never met or heard of. Not less than 25 calls in the space of an hour (before I switched off my mobile), all wanting a copy of the Parrikar v/s Parrikar interview posted here some weeks back. My curiosity piqued at this sudden surge of interest, I soon learnt of Vidyadhar Gadgil's attempt at a spoof of the Parrikar conversation in today's Gomantak Times. I picked up a copy of GT and at once noticed an attractive colour photo of a screen shot of Manohar Parrikar and I prominently displayed over 3 wide columns. There was obviously something more to this than met the eye. Why would anyone plaster such a large colour photograph on prime newspaper real estate? Answer: Only if your real aim was to get people to notice the photograph and forget the rest. It seems to have worked like a charm. Everyone saw the photograph of Manohar-bab and moi and promptly forgot about Gadgil's magnum opus of a spoof! They wanted the DVD of the interview. Right away! People who hadn't heard of the interview, didn't have access to the net, or hadn't seen it on local TV, are clamoring for a copy. In one masterful stroke, the Comrade has revived interest in Manohar Parrikar's conversation just when it was ebbing from our memory.
