MUMBAI: Ever thought that the milk that you consume could cause brain
disorder, Alzheimer’s or even dry up your blood? According to the findings of
Consumer Guidance Society of India (CGSI), adulterated milk can cause serious
health problems that may also include depression in bone marrow, kidney
failure, strokes, and heavy metal poisoning.
Dr MS Kamath, honorary secretary of CGSI, said, “Adulteration could have a
long-time impact on the health of people, and the menace needs to be stopped.”
The members of the society briefed the media after they found that five per
cent of the milk samples that they tested in the city, were adulterated.
On April 26, CGSI and students of SIES College collected 335 samples, both
packed and open, from across the city and did a quality test. Harsha Mehta,
principal of the college, said, “Around 40 of our volunteers participated in
the qualitative test of the milk samples that were bought by them.” In all, 15
samples were found to be adulterated.
“These are gross adulterations. According to our tests, apart from water
which is the most common adulterant, we also found soda, salt, cane sugar and
glucose in them,” said Sitaram Dixit, managing committee member of CGSI. Though
only five per cent of the samples were found to be adulterated, CGSI members
consider the figure threatening. “It is threatening is because a substantial
degree of chemicals is used. Despite laws against it, milk adulteration is
rampant,” said Kamath.
Mohan Patankar, joint commissioner, FDA, said, “The samples collected from
the 15 locations have been sent for tests. Reports should be out within 10-15
days, and on the basis of that, action will be taken.”
