Dears,
I regret to contradict each and every report that has been filed about this
supposed scrapyard going up in flames in the local dailies. It was not a
scrapyard at all. It was an industry cleaning and recirculating toxic
contaminated/soiled sacking and tins/drums etc.
Pls go through this letter signed by the following residents of Khorlim on 20
August, 2000.

Sub:- Grievances of Residents of Ward 12 - Khorlim.
Dear Madam/Sir,
We the residents of Ward 12 are writing to you in disgust because of the total
neglect of our ward and you'll permitting illegalities that have made a mess of
our ward. We request you to look into the following at the earliest.
(Signaature Campaign list attached)
1. Sac & Tin Industry Polluting all the water bodies & polltants released in
open drain. Foul smell 24 hours & large vehicles disturb the villagers at odd
hours. It could also be a fire hazard.
2. Neglect of road and open gutters, garbage not collected regularly.
3. Bars allowed in residential areas and drunkards urinating all over in the
open in front of women and children.
4.Illegal constructions & hill cutting allowed by politician's chamchas.
5.Stray dog & Cattle menace, dogs attacking children often nears Mrs. Vaz house.

Residents of Khorlim Ward 12, Mapusa.
Note 1: Complaint received by authorities on same date.
Note 2: Lady Health Officer came & checked the site in 2004, gave notice to
violators ...thereafter no follow-up.
Comments:
This industry which was illegally operating all this while inspite of the
complaints to the authorities was dealing in washing/cleaning of of sacks,
tins, barrels and sending them back to the respective companies and what have
you. But hidden/camouflaged in these products were large quantities of alcohol
and may be other stuff, not ruling out drugs.
The entire political class has been working in connivance with this illegal
industry which has polluted Khorlim's ground water to a severe extent with
toxic effluents releasing them into the open storm water drains. City fathers
and mothers including higher up politicians have had their eyes closed as there
has been a strong nexus between these illegal operators and them for self
gratification.
The neighbouhood citizens should be interviewed and a thorough investigation
must be conducted into this illegal trade that has been allowed to go on for
such a long time and not only punish the people directly connected with this
industry, but also past and present MMC officials and Councilors, including the
Deputy Collectors and Mamlatdars and police officials where necessary.
The report as given out by most of the local dailies is false and
untrustworthy. What went up in flames has never been a scrapyard. It was a
toxic effluent cleaning and redistributing industry.
