<Tony Fernandes, the head of Malaysian-based AirAsia, which plans to
startflights to India in October, says profitability in the Indian
low-costsector "will happen without a doubt". But he adds that so far
airlines arenot following the right model and are competing too much on the
same routesand at the same airports. "I don't think it's a cost problem," he
says. "Ithink they are not following the model. We'll let all the Indian
airlineskill each other first. Then we will come in.">
Who is Tony Fernandes trying to fool? Does he seriously think there will be
no airlines left so he can make a grand entry? Has he forgotten that he is
an "international" low cost carrier and may not qualify as a domestic one in
India? Given that he is neither willing nor able to "compete", his
gratutitous comments about Indian carriers may be only to score some brownie
points with the civil aviation ministry who may be sitting on his
application for entering Indian international skies. The rest of the article
was interesting but Tony's comments were pretty disappointing. Let's hope he
has something constructive to offer at an early date especially for Goa.
