Help others be BETTER INFORMED ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ GOACAN to highlight the need for Consumer Literacy ------------------------------------------------------- The Goa Civic and Consumer Action Network (GOACAN) is observing a Consumer Rights Awareness Fortnight from 12th to 25th June. The fortnight long program which seeks to address the lack of awareness on consumer rights, the complaint procedures and redressal mechanisms will end on 25th June State Consumers Rights Day.
During the fortnight GOACAN will highlight the need for "consumer literacy" so that consumers could make an effort to Read their rights and Write their complaints. Among the consumer issues that GOACAN will focus on during the fortnight are the Goa Call Centre & Telephone Directory for BSNL consumers, 24hour consumer helpline by Electrcity Department, Home Delivery, computerised billing & Mechanical Safety check for LPG connections, complusory issue of bus tickets, 50% concession and identity cards for all students. GOACAN will also promote consumer participation in Road Safety and Traffic Management, effective use of Primary Health Centres, formation of Housing Societies by flat owners, Garbage management, Food & Medicine Safety, Disaster Management and prevention of vector borne diseases. In order to draw public and media attention to consumer issues during the fortnight, visits will be organised by Consumer Forums to super markets, grocery stores, pharmacies and other shops to check the implementation of consumer rights. Consumer Forum activists will also organise "phone in's" with the Commercial Tax, Legal Metrology, Food & Drug Administration, Civil Supplies, Transport and other consumer related Departments as well as promote the benefits of the Consumer Protection Act 1986. Doubtful Gift schemes & Investment offers, violations of Packaged Commodities Rules and the ISI mark, sale of fake, spurious & adulterated goods will be identified during this fortnight.
