Dear Samir,
I agree with you that Goa is in the hands of very incompetent people. This
incompetence is not confined to the political parties alone, it became all too
clear just from hearing the speakers at GPA. None of the speakers comported
themselves with any credibility or inspired any confidence for the future of
Goa. I may sound very crass and snobbish when I say this but rhetoric alone is
not going to save Goa. Infact juxtaposed against the GPA, I was very impressed
with Manohar Parriker's interview with Rajan and if it wasn't for his RSS
credentials, I would fully endorse him. Ofcourse, it helps that he is rakishly
handsome too :-)
I also agree with you that Goa has to create wealth. I'm one of those
"macro-economic-multiplier-effect" zealots and am of the firm belief that Goa
has to generate wealth inorder to sustain itself. Otherwise, we can look
forward to much greater upheavals as a result of the small pie constantly being
divided into tiny portions. Creation of wealth, however, is constantly
compromising and the hard questions to ask are, which are the compromises we
can live with and which are one we cannot stomach.
There are several opportunities Goa can pursue without damage to its
environment; retail, medical tourism and university town can be on the top of
this list.
