Corporator behind parking scam?

PANJIM, JUNE 20 - In a major development, the person arrested in the Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP) pay parking scam has named Corporator Nagesh Karshetty in the case.

According to sources, Satish Pujari, a resident of Malim, who was arrested yesterday night by Panjim Police, during the course of an investigation, has disclosed that the scam was being run at the behest of the corporator.

Sources further said that the police are on a look out for Nagesh.

Incidentally, he belongs to the group of five corporators who has been creating ripples in the CCP. He was also part of the Babush Monserrate-led morcha which attacked the police station with stones on February 19 this year. He was elected on the panel floated by Babush last year.

Meanwhile, Panjim town police Inspector Francisco Corte when contacted refused to give any details with regards to the investigations.

"At this stage I cannot say anything as it can hamper investigation," he said.

He further said that the police arrested two person yesterday Satish Pujari and Vijay Kundaikar.

While the JMFC has granted a day's remand for Pujari, Vijay who was produced in the juvenile court yesterday for being a minor was granted bail, Corte said.

He said police are also on a lookout for two other persons who are absconding.

A major scam was unearthed couple of days ago to the tune of Rs 40 lakh when unknown persons were collecting pay parking fees at exhorbitant rates in the name of Corporation of the City of Panaji near the tourism jetty below Mandovi Bridge.

The scam was unearthed by corporators of the ruling faction in the CCP led by Suresh Chopdekar and Menino D'Cruz and it was first reported in the Herald.
