I ws told by many Goans in Mumbai that Anthony was a Goan, but it could be true
that like many Goans, mostly outside Goa and Bombay, they said they were
Anglo-Indians.
Many Goans felt that the Brabourne Stadium should be named after Anthony. A
potrait of Anthony stands hung at the reception desk of the CCI. I also asked
some CCI members why they do not change the name. One reason the cricket
officials and even BCCI officials say that Anthony was very rude and behaved in
a dictorial fashion.
One old journalist, now no more, who worked for UNI was the founding member of
the CCI, at that time, very less money had told me that Anthony was a Goan.
In this times when many roads and instituions are renamed after Indians, it is
surprising that the Brabourne Stadium is still named after a British governor.
The government cannot interfere because CCI is a private club.
Anthony perhaps was not a member of the CCI but helped in getting BCCI to build
the stadium. One of the major trophies given out by BCCI is named is known as
the D'Mello Trophy. Perhaps for the runners-up of Ranji Trophy tournament.
Goans very older than me also told me that Anthony wanted to help Lusitanians
club acquire a place at Marine Lines. Such things could be confirmed as there
is no written evidence.
Anthony is also known as the Father of the Asian Games.
The Anglo-Indians of Calcutta claim Leander Paes as Anglo, as his mother is
Anglo, the basketball player and former India captian Jennifer. I think if I
remember correctly he himself said he was Anglo in one interview.
