Joe, That picture of the overloaded ferryboat is indeed worth a thousand words! Before the Nehru Bridge was built, all the people living in Bardez and working/studying in Panjim used the ferry and launches. For those in Betim, Verem and Britona this mode of transport was a way of life. But, reading all the reports on the current volume of traffic on the Mandovi, it is evident that the risk of a collision with a barge or any other vessel has increased - except during the monsoon season when the barges don't ply due to the sandbar at Aguada. Over the years, nothing has changed with regards to safety of the people. I guess only some disaster will open the eyes of the politicians. I am sure that there will not be enough life vests or floatation devices to save 10 people, should there be a tragedy! I remember of an incident in the late 60s, when a ferry started taking in water in the middle of the river and was barely able to make it to the Betim side --only because its engine did not die! My entire family and quite a few of our friends could have perished that day! Sad to see that almost 4 decades later, nothing has changed!
