While the police have been unearthing the mystery of the ownership of the truck
lying abandoned at the Monte approach road alleged to be containing the cache
of swords;; the temporary shed housing a furniture shop which was partially
razed in an unprecendeted fire late June, 2008 when the riots took place at
Rumdamoll Housing Board was today sought to be cleared off and the remaining
furniture lying there confiscated.
Interestingly the site is close to the Casa Silva near the official residence
of the Superintendent of Police South Goa at Aquem Margao, beyond the Costa
grounds towards power house.
While the exercise of clearing the site with a large posse of police began
today afternoon, many in the crowd and from the nearby residences who spoke to
this writer late evening were surprised that the police who drop the SP day in
and out were unaware of the developments just under their nose.
There is also an apprehension that the kin of one of the noted individual Mr
Bashir now cooling his heels behind bars was in fact alleged to be
associated with nursing of the CM’s and MLA Margao’s Mr Digamber Kamat vote
bank atop the Monte.
Apparently this could have been the raison d etre for the police having to
tread softly. Another voter close to the local MLA Mr Kamat was at pains
to explain that the CM could not be blamed for the state of affairs at Monte in
his own constituency . He alleged that the slum existed even before Mr Kamat
became a councilor and that he was only nursing this vote bank consisting not
only of Moslems but also Hindu migrants as was done by the late MLA Mr Anant
(Babu ) Naik as they have excercised their franchise in the CM’s favour. He
went on to plead on behalf of the CM that if Goans do not come out and vote
in large numbers irrespective of the party and the candidate what harm is
there if the migrants who have voted and assured Mr Kamat their unstinted
support earn his good will. After all he went on arguing vociferously that the
CM has provided them only metered power water supply bare and a few comforts
essential for
a human being.
But as he was getting in animated discussions another individual popped in to
allege that Mr Kamat had being wooing the migrants with his personal
endorsements on their letter applications which were viewed as authoritative
directions by the bureaucrats viz; CO Margao Municipal Council, Mamlatdar ,
Department of Power and Water supply, while he did not take care of the our
minority community (meaning Catholics ) most of whom invariably vote for the
INC. He said the MLA often boasted that Catholics have no alternative but to
vote for the INC and as far as migrants he earns their votes after rendering
them some service . Partially in an inebriated state he went to allege that
there are many among the Catholic community who have been at the receiving end
of Mr Kamat . . Be it matters which come under the Rent Control act or
encroachments on private properties etc even the liberal grant of ration
cards mostly with
fictitious House Nos all these he alleged had the blessings of Mr Kamat as
he has always had a soft corner towards the migrant vote bank.
Meanwhile it is learnt that the arrested individual one F. Coutinho hails
from Sontricotto in Cuncolim . It is alleged that he had indeed made a fake
electoral photo identity card in the name of a fictitious individual to enable
them produce the same for obtaining documents from the Road transport
authorities. The offence is non bailable, and could earn him a life term
imprisonment . According to some police sources the said individual has been
involved in several unlawful activities.
The well meaning citizens of Margao have to an extent praised the police with
special mention made of a top police officer Shri Yadav, SP who has specially
been deputed to undercover the swords cache .
