Dears,

The photo on page A 10 of the GT dated 9 July, 2008 caught my eye. My brain
said Tabebuia rosea,  the purplish-red flowered, almost leafless tree I was
familiar with in Bangalore. There are a few trees of this species near the Se
Cathedral in Old Goa. Other than that, I have not seen the tree anywhere in
Goa. Brazil is in the Southern Hemisphere and so it may be flowering in August
there. In Bangalore it flowered closer to November. The leaves of the seedlings
also look like Tabebuia [earlier lumped with Tecoma]

I could not find a reference to "Ipe". The closest I could get to was Tabebuia
leucoxyla DC. This is a native of Brazil. Its wood is water resistant and is
used to make wooden shoes.

Tabebuia argentia, the silver barked tree with yellow trumpet-like flowers can
be seen at NIO, Dona Paula.

In any case, the Moniz brothers Igidio and Joaquim are going to make Curtorim a
more colourful place than their Ganv-bhav, Francisco Sardinha did in 14 years
as the Minister for Agriculture and almost a year as CM of Goa. All power to
them and their venture. May their tribe increase.

Mog asundi.

If anyone can shed some light on "Ipe", I will be obliged if they can post here.

Colours of the rainbow : getting in petals from another world

What better way to give back to Goa than to keep it green and grow
more plants! Igidio Moniz, originally from Curtorim, now based in
Brazil, still has his heart set here and is introducing the 'Ipe' tree
to Goa.

See [http://www.tropicalhardwoods.com/htm/tropical_hardwoods/ipe.htm]
or [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tabebuia]

"We want to germinate this plant and make Goa a beautiful place for
future generations". Add Carol and Joaquim in unison.
