TRI CONTINENTAL FILM FESTIVAL 2008

Not many people know that the legendary revolutionary Che Guevara's hands were severed and are missing. However, there are some remarkable men and women who are prepared to risk their lives to recover the two hands. Their bizarre and secret stories unfold in the film 'The Hands of Che Guevara'.

This film is to be screened as part of the 4th Tri Continental Film Festival to be held in Goa from July 25th to 30th, 2008. The festival, which is a selection of some of the best films on Human Rights, is being hosted in Goa by Moving Images in collaboration with the Entertainment Society of Goa and International Centre Goa.

The Tri Continental Film Festival is brought to India by Breakthrough New Delhi, an international human rights organization. The films capture diverse images from the Global South - narrative, documentary, feature and short-length films from Africa, Asia and America. Throughout the year, the festival's Travelling Screen tours various cities across India, taking these award winning and critically acclaimed films to universities, cultural institutions and citizens' groups.

In 2008, the attempt of the festival is to bring to the fore untold stories from the past. The common thread of human rights runs through stories from countries as diverse as Tunisia, China, Rwanda, Sudan and Brazil.

The festival aims not only to screen excellent cinema but also spark discussions, diatribes and debates around human rights and social justice.

The festival is open to public. The screenings will be held at Maquinez Palace at ESG Complex and Mandovi Hall at International Centre Goa. Delegate passes can be collected at ESG between 10 am to 5 pm starting 21st July; delegate registration fee is Rs.25 for students (on producing a valid ID) and Rs.100 for all others. The full schedule of the festival can be seen on the Moving Images website www.moviesgoa.org. For more information contact Moving Images at 9421246383.

Though the festival is relatively recent, it has in just three years managed to screen over 75 films in 335 screenings. Most of the premier educational institutions like the IITs, Delhi University, J.N.U., Punjab University, Bangalore University, Xavier's College, Kolkata, Wilson College, Mumbai and many more have been regularly hosting this festival.

The festival was started by a group of Latin American filmmakers, the Movimiento de Documentalistas, as an arts and cultural initiative. The idea was to explore links between social struggles and respect for human rights. It was initiated in Argentina in 2002, South Africa 2003 and in India in 2004.

A five-member international jury selects the films that are screened. This year over a hundred and thirty five entries were received.

In Goa, Moving Images will make available these films, and also those from previous Tri Continental festivals to various colleges as well. Colleges can request for screenings (at no cost) from July onwards by contacting Salil Konkar of Moving Images at 9421246383 or by sending an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
