""" How about Goan Hindu surnames like Desai and Prabhu ?'' or for that matter surnames like Kamat, Pai, Angle, Keni, Kenkre, Kare,Hegde, Kantak, Naik etc. I did mention in my previous post that a section of Hindu community had three names, but they did not have surnames as such. Due to the requirements of Portuguese bureaucracy these family (or is it gotra) names became Hindu surnames. I still feel that an overwhelming majority of modern day Hindu community surnames end in ....kar as in Asnodkar, Kandolkar etc. For the Mandovi centric Goans, Pinto, Lobo,Mascarenhas, Noronha, Braganza , Menezes are popular surnames. but Salcete is home to Rebello, Barreto, Vaz, Cardozo, Colaco and they are in a substantial majority. Margao telephone directory alone has 31 columns of Fernandes' phone nos whereas deSouzas of Mapuca, Panjim, Vasco and Margao put together total 20 columns only.
