Born on 22 Jan 1944 studied in Goa, Poona, New Delhi, São Paulo before
moving to Londrina University where he set up a Centre of Afro-Asian Studies
in 1985. Eduardo Judas Barros was unstoppable in his cultural activities. I
had known him as a senior colleague at Rachol Seminary, where he combined
his theological studies with editing of the daily newspaper "A Vida", in
partnership with Fr. Lucio da Veiga Coutinho. He was a lover of Konkani and
brought out the first Gova Almanak in 1967. Incidentally, I tried my
incipient talent at drawing with some cartoons in this first Almanak.

Judas Barros spent a day with me in 1994, the year I moved to Portugal, and
later again in 2004. During the past two years I had been sensing some
ominous silence. My last few e-mails to him remained without response. I had
begun to sense that something must be wrong. Unfortunately it was so. Judas
Barros died yesterday and the funeral will be tomorrow at 17 h. The
Vice-Chancelor of Londrina University, Prof. Wilmar S. Marçal, has declared
official mourning.

I remember an obituary note for V.K. Rajwade, who contributed immensely to
the History of the Marathas. He would move around with bag on his shoulders
and laddus in his pocket (as his only meal) collecting private family
records. Today there is an archive dedicated to him. The obtiuary note ended
with: "Rest, restless soul rest". May the inspiration and love for Goan
culture that made Eduardo Judas Barros restless continue aflame!
