When TOI, in a random survey visited Santa Cruz High School, we were met with the sight of a student kneeling outside the classroom. School headmaster Plutino Fernandes explained, "Punishment should not be to the extent of causing physical pain to the student, but sometimes it is vital that a student be reprimanded by making him stand outside the class. In extreme cases, we call the parents of the child and talk to them." Corporal punishment is also banned by the Supreme Court and there exist guidelines from the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights to implement the same. Goa's education department issued a circular asking schools to not only spare the rod but to refrain from using demeaning language while dealing with students. Institutes were warned that teachers could be suspended if charges of corporal punishment were found to be true. Under the NCPCR guidelines, pinching, slapping, caning, hitting with a duster, throwing chalk at a child, making a child kneel down, run on the playground, stand on a bench/table and smearing a student's face with chalk powder amount to forms of corporal punishment. The commission has also included name-calling in the list. While some schools have been using counselling and psychological punishment methods, there are those who continue to use the rod. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Goa/Some_Goa_schools_still_trust_the_ rod/articleshow/3281952.cms ~(^^)~ Avelino --------------------------------------------------------------------------- **** http://www.GOANET.org **** --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tri Continental Film Festival 2008 July 25 - 30, 2008 Goa, India http://www.moviesgoa.org/page/tri_continental/ http://www.moviesgoa.org/tricon/schedule_2008.pdf ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
