Police suspect more land scams in Bardez

NT NETWORK

MAPUSA: Having already registered three cases of land fraud, the Mapusa police
have not ruled out the possibility of more such frauds coming to light in the
next few days saying that the detected cases were just the tip of the iceberg.

Maintaining that a network of officials from the registrar, advocates, notaries
and some middlemen are involved in the racket police sources claimed that so
far all the main accused persons have been found to be absconding.

Police claim that the culprits use fake names and names of dead persons as the
modus operandi and keep an eye on various stretches of lands and strike deals
after confirming that the owners are abroad or dead.

It may be recalled that the first case came to light a few months back when one
Siddiqui who is presently absconding had fraudulently taken possession of a
large land and sold it to different people at Tivim with a false power of
attorney. The actual property owners are based abroad and were unaware until
they were informed.
Last week itself two such cases one at Saligao, Sangolda and the other at
Verla, Canca came to light. All these three cases are registered at the Mapusa
police station.
While police are leaving no stone unturned to trace the culprits, they feel
that the government should come out with strict and deterrent steps so that
some foolproof documents are made during property, which would not leave any
room for such nefarious activities.

Pointing out to Tereza D’Souza, the main accused in the Saligao-Sangolda land
fraud who has been released on bail, police have revealed that their
investigations have led them to believe that Tereza was lured by money by two
lawyers who are the main culprits and who are currently absconding.

Police have urged people not to fall prey to their monetary greed. Urging the
people to be vigilant about their properties and such cases, Mapusa police have
sought the co-operation of citizens in providing them with any vital links or
clues about the culprits, which could enable them to bust this network.
