Selma, Cornel, others,
Yahoo has me jinxed, my emails fly out before I'm ready to send them! May
I recommend an excellent book by Robert B. Edgerton: MAU MAU, an African
Crucible. It was published in 1989 by the Free Press in New York, and by
Collier Macmillan in London.
The book is very well researched, and fair in its treatment. Pio Gama
Pinto's role is mentioned, and his connection to rival factions is touched on.
No doubt Cornel's book, when it comes out, will throw further light on Pio's
great impact on the Kenyan struggle for independence.
The Free Press asked me to edit Edgerton's book and I jumped at the
opportunity. The manuscript was a revelation; I was essentially being paid for
enhancing my education.
     To quote from the blurb:
"Indeed, it ranks among the most scarring experiences in British Imperial
history. While the movement was confined to a single tribe - the Kikuyu - and
although its fighters were poorly armed and had no outside sources of support,
it took thousands of British troops equipped with all the modern implements of
war over four years to defeat the main Mau Mau force, and almost a decade to
extinguish its remnants. Yet paradoxically, it was not the deaths of 11,000 Mau
Mau that eventually brought about the independence of Kenya, but the repugnant
brutality of many Kenyan whites and their African allies."
     Regards to all,
     Victor.

Hi Cornel,
Thanks for that informative post. I've heard from my cousins who were in
Africa, that Goans were very racist against Africans and totally supported the
white regime. Don't know if there is any truth to it, would be interested in
this point of view.
