Ref. Goenet A post/Query on the origin of TARVOTTI (quoted below) Tar-votti
I think it is taken from the Konkani word ‘Tarum’ Tarun= boat/canoe/ship Tarum=Voddem, pathmar, bott TarRUM is pronounced as in ‘Po-RUM’ (last year/past years) Also, as in Me-RUM (deer) Plural of Tarum is Tarvam (boats) So also, Merum is Mervam (more than one deer) Gorum becomes Gorvam (cow/bull becomes cows/.bulls, cattle, herds) Exception: ‘Porum’ (last year) plural is not ‘Porvam’ where as Porvam in Konkani ‘the day after tomorrow’ Talking about TARUM Ever heard of this Konkani saying/idiom? Eka patkeak lagon ek TARUM boddlolem (one ship sumk because of a sinner onboard) We have recently used this idiom in Delhi. 4 of us went to Delhi and we wanted to return back by air. We tried our best, even visited the Airport but all in vein. Not that there were no tickets or we were short of money but one of us had no photoID on him. So the others sacrificed travelling by air and travelled by train instead. There we said ‘eka patkeak lagon ek tarum buddlolem tosli ghot amchi zali’ In the above context, the one who had no ID on him is a ‘Patki’ (sinner) because of him we travelled 36hrs instead of just 2.5 hrs by air. That Patki has now applied for Election Card. In 1963 Konkani Film AMCHEM NOXIB Anthomy Mendes saying in his song ‘Goddacho Pum’ Moga tum mojem sukh Mhojea mogacho rukh Gopant astoch tum lagona maka bhuk Hacho mog kelolo porum Daunta koxen atam dorum Doryant lotton voita mogachem TARUM Listen to it here from 1.11 minute http://in.youtube.com/watch?v=bXDcChFItVk There is another song (I can’t recollect now) PAI/hanv ASA TARVAR CHOLOITA MONVAR ??????? *could it be a Alfred Songs? Any one? At home at the time of Saibinn (OL that goes house to house) We used to sing the foll hymn DOREACHE LARAR, LAR-U ETA TARVOTTI BABDDE AKANT ETAT DOLLE SORGAR TUFANACHEA ORDEAR) TEA PASOT MAYE NOMAN MURI (Rpt last two lines) As for the other half Tar-VOTTI, it has come from the word TARUM Ran (Jungle/Forest), if he lives in RAN he becomes RAN_VOTTI e.g. Ran= Jungle/Forest Ranvotti = Person living in jungle/forest (uncivilized) Tarum= Ship/boat Tarvotti= Person living/working on ship Other related word.. Tum tarvar kosli sirvis korta? Topoz –achi sirvis korta Topaz or Topoz mhonche kitem? (The one who clean cabin toilets etc) Those days we were told never to ask a Tarvotti about the type of job they are doing because it was regarded as an insult to them.. Another Konkani saying ‘BIKONN MAROP’ I think has come from ‘tarvotti’ Those days tarvotti were waiting for months for the next call to join the ship. They were going to Bombay to inquire about it and spent weeks/months in Bombay Goan Clubs (Kudd). Like most Cinema theatre in the country, our Goan Clubs too infested with bed-bugs. e.g. Agnel-ak azunui sirvis zaunk nam, babddo kullant ‘bikunn marta’ Another e.g. Joe’s new shop at Panjim; there are no customers at all ‘babddo bikunn marta tinga’. Also, reminds me of Late Minguel Rod. In his popular song played on AIR.. Borim cheddvam tanchea (Tarvotteachea) mogan poddnam Poddtai tim paimxim maddachim son’nam That’s enough for now >From the desk of Professor JoeGoaUk Quote: [Goanet] Origin of word Tarvotti - help Can someone help me, perhaps Ven'u, who is good at these things. I'd like to know the actually meaning of the word tarvotti. I am assuming it is two words, the genesis being "tarv", and the addition being "otti". So if possible, what is the word "tarv", is a Portugeuse word absorbed by our language, or does it have a Konkani origin. Any help appreciated.
