Interestingly, sarpanch who started his speech by saying that he did not know
what was meant by mega projects ended up blaming the landowners for selling
their land for mega projects thereby indirectly indicating that he knew the
meaning of mega projects.

****** (My question is how the sarpanch knows that the landowners are selling
their land for mega projects?) the sarpanch is elected by the village people
then why the sarpanch can't listen to people voices?

When contacted Local MLA and Deputy Speaker Mauvin Godinho said that the
meeting was insignificant since apart from being ill informed, the organizers
had no creditability. He said that he had his own views on mega projects, which
he would disclose later.

****** (What plans Mauvin will have? he is only thinking to destroy Goa & make
money for himself.) He is always suppporting the Non-Goans. What he has done
for Goans???

Need to stop mega projects at Cortalim, Quelossim: meet

HERALD CORRESPONDENT

CORTALIM, AUG 17 – The maiden meet to deliberate on the controversial mega
housing projects at Cortalim and Quelossim evoked good response with several
speakers stressing on the need to stop such projects, which are detrimental to
the interests of Goans.

Accusing the Sarpanch Caitano Xavier for not convening a special gram sabha
within 15 days as promised, former sarpanch Antonio Francisco said the
panchayat was not interested in peoples welfare. He reminded the villagers that
the 73rd and 74th amendments to the Constitution gave enough powers to the
panchayat to deal with the issues affecting their villages.

Francisco also accused panchayat secretary for playing with time in issuing
documents applied under the Right of Information Act. Later, a signature
campaign was taken to demand for a special gram sabha.
In his speech, Rector of Blessed Joseph Vaz Sanctuary, Sancoale Fr Eremito
Rebelo appealed to the
Goans to unite and not to rely on politicians to save their identity.

Fr Rebelo called upon the people of Cortalim and Quelossim to form their own
committees to safeguard
their villages and was done in Sancoale and elsewhere.

The sarpanch who was also present regretted that people only targeted the
sarpanch and panchas although politicians at a higher level created the
problem. Interestingly, sarpanch who started his speech by saying that he did
not know what was meant by mega projects ended up blaming the landowners for
selling their land for mega projects thereby indirectly indicating that he knew
the meaning of mega projects.

Anthony Marques from Siridao gave a recount of the agitations they resorted
against such projects and claimed that they had managed to thwart such projects
in their village unitedly.

Mr Marques called upon the youth in particular to participate in large numbers
if the identity of the State is to be protected.

When contacted Local MLA and Deputy Speaker Mauvin Godinho said that the
meeting was insignificant since apart from being ill informed, the organizers
had no creditability. He said that he had his own views on mega projects, which
he would disclose later.

Others who spoke included Peter Gama of Verna and Luiza Pereira of Cortalim
both from SEZ Virodhi Manch, Cortalim Parish Priest Joseph D’Silva, Engineer
Dilip Bandodkar and Convenor Mariano Dias who was instrumental in arranging the
meeting.

Antonette Marques an anti-mega housing activists from Siridao and Deputy
Sarpanch Marcello Monteiro was also present along with other panchas.

Fr Joseph D’Silva also recited a Konkani song Sobit Sundor Amchem Goem on the
occasion. Kennedy Pereira compered the programme.
