We will not allow any changes in official language bill : GKA chief
PANAJI- Pundalik Naik, President of Goa Konkani Akademi and eminent Konkanni
writer, who was convenor of the 'Konkanni Porjecho Awaz' at the time the
Konkanni language bill was passed, was quite upset with the statement of the
Chief Minister and told The Navhind Times that he was confused as to how the
Chief Minister could make such a statement. At that time it was not only the
government?s decision but the policy of the Congress party and the party had
got it cleared by the government.
While replying to the demands on the language issue on Monday during the
ongoing assembly session, the Chief Minister, Mr Digambar Kamat said that he
was ready to discuss this issue and to find satisfactory solution once and for
all for the good of Goa and Goans.
Mr Manohar Parrikar?s private member resolution to constitute a committee of
representatives of MLAs, supporters of Roman script and supporters of Marathi
is scheduled to be discussed on August 29 in the House.
Naik vehemently said they would not allow any changes in the official language
bill and it should be realised that as of now the youth force with love for
their mother tongue was much bigger then during the time of the language
agitation and also charged that there had been efforts to make changes in the
bill earlier.
He argued that the 'Goa Konkani Akademy' was there to guide the government on
Konkani as well as to put the policies of the government into
practice.
Around four years back Dr Wilfred De Souza had moved a private members
resolution to give patronage to Konkani in the Romi script. This was during my
first tenure as the president of the GKA and at that time we took a decision
that we would give all help and treat Roman script on par with Devanagri
script. All schemes like publishing, programmes, giving awards for everything
both scripts would be treated on par, and argued further that they had always
treated tiatrs as part of Konkanni literature and they never done any injustice
to any Konkanni writer or literature in the past four years and even before
that.ENDS
