Ghantti Who is a Ghantti? As per the JoeGoaUk dictionary, a Ghantti is the one who comes to Goa from other parts of India (sometimes from neighbouring countries like Nepal) with an intention to live in Goa and to practice his culture or habits like defecating in public places, spitting, urinating, rough sleeping, begging, causing nuisance etc.. A ghantti not only come along with his bags and baggages & family but culture, traditions, habits etc. too. Ghantti family usually lives in zompottpotti or slum (see pic ) even though some earn average Rs.300 per day. Others live in sharing rooms upto to 10 per small room. (many rich, including NRIs, professionals etc are also seen shabbily dressed). Similarly, a well dressed, rich, good looking etc does not necessarily mean he/she is not a Ghantti. A person driving a car or a riding a motorcycle etc can still be a ghantti. No matter how good are his/her looks or how well dressed etc if you see any one involved in any of the above acts, then he/she is 99% most likely to be a ghantti. In Goa, we now have too many Ghanttis and as such, if no steps taken, Goa will soon become a Ghantti State. Any picture of a ‘typical Goan’ on the web, magazine etc will soon be replaced with a ‘Ghantti’. Some Holidays brochures already started showing ‘Lamani’ as Goan girl or Woman. I had forwarded that pic here about 5 years ago. Just because they find many lamannis in Calangute, Baga, Anjuna, Colva etc they think she is Goan.
