Dear Goanetters,
I've been coordinating with Toxics Links and Greenpeace in the past on
electronic waste in Goa, and it seems that legislation for the same has
still not been put in place in most of India. Progressive states like
Kerala have drafted legislation, while big cites like Bangalore,
Hyderabad and Chennai have private stakeholders like E-Parisram and
Ramky taking care of proper electronic waste disposal. Nothing much
happening here in Goa... the only significant action on toxics is the
action by Goacan to collect batteries with the help of the consumer
foums all over Goa.
With regards to Toxics, Greenpeace, has been quite successful in
campaigning against polluting industries, and getting big companies in
India like Wipro, Samsung, HCL & Acer to take care of their electronic
waste. This afternoon, I got a call from an action's coordinator at
Greenpeace India asking if there might be anybody interested in
volunteering their participation in a Greenpeace action on Wednesday,
10th September here in Goa.
As I've seen in Greenpeace Sweden, Greenpeace India's actions too are
interesting, using catchy slogans, giant size banners, and get the
attention of the press to highlight issues. This action on the 10th of
September promises to be interesting enough. Those interested, must be
21 years or older and should should have a valid ID proof like passport,
driver's license or voter ID card. If you would like to volunteer, sms
or call or email me.
Volunteers shall be briefed about the action on Monday, 8th September,
and until then you can learn more about the campaign at
