Tension grips South Goa's coastal village Tension gripped South Goa's coastal village Benaulim after a mob opposing a mega housing project in the village attacked the houses of head-woman and other panchayat members over the arrest of their two leaders.
The trouble began on Tuesday evening when Colva police, under whose jurisdiction the village falls, intercepted a bus and arrested the alleged accused involved in attacking the local panchayat last week. The mob allegedly attacked the houses of head-woman Carmelina Fernande and other panchayat members and vandalised property and vehicles, after holding a rally outside the police station on Tuesday evening. Sensing trouble, police released both the leaders and increased security of the area. Police is yet to receive a formal complaint in this matter. "Sarpanch is reluctant to lodge a complaint as the mob may turn more violent," a police officer said adding the situation is under control.
