It was nostalgic to read Patricia Alvares's article on Goa weddings (September
18th).

Weddings of yore were so charming.  They were always held  in  bungalows or if
the homes were not large enough to house the  number of guests invited,  a
pandal  was erected.  Although I was a little girl at the time, I remember the
old "mest" Deg Joao who was famous all over North Goa for his splendid food.
There was always a large succulent fish dish dressed with mayonnaise and super
salad, olive oil and olives (can never understand how he managed to do it so
perfectly), besides several other mouthwatering Goan dishes. I can never forget
the Canjo de Galinha (chicken soup). Champagne and the best moscatel always
flowed in abundance.  I dont think (or perhaps dont remember) whiskeys being
served at the time.  I wonder if Deg Joao had any offspring to carry on  after
he passed away.  The band was always Johnson & his Jolly boys and at the time,
we all went into a trance listening to his rich baritone singing Portuguese
fados and English
songs, not forgetting the  music for  tangos and waltzes.
