The comments against Dr Santosh Helekar are extremely unfair and
disappointing. I can understand their pain and anguish but Selma and
Marshall must stop behaving in such a childish and whimsical manner.
Just because they are wailing and lamenting more, they should not
presume to believe that others lack the sympathy and the empathy that
they have for the unfortunate victims and their families.

Sorry Sandeep you have got the plot all horribly wrong. I am not a professional
mourner. Nor do I have any axe to grind with Santosh. I respect his views. And
that is precisely why I felt hurt and let down with his response to the Orissa
carnage. He has tried to belittle and play down the violence in Orissa against
the Christian community which has been by far the worst in India in living
memory without condemning the violence.
I quote him 'Amidst the barrage of posts about people dying and churches
burning, it is hard to tell the grain from the chaff. To make matters worse,
true to form, sectarian impulses overpower any semblance of objectivity in the
press or in internet forums. In all the propaganda and counter-propaganda
efforts being undertaken on behalf of various interests, it is hard to find a
rational assessment of any instance of religious strife.'
He terms independent news reports from the mainstream media and eyewitness
accounts as propaganda. Isn't this like rubbing salt into open wounds? If you
were at the receiving end of such violence, what would you feel?

All the same, I do not wish to prolong this debate/ discussion till it
degenerates into a personal slangfist. Santosh is free to hold his views. We
can agree to disagree. And you are right, we need to move on to more important
matters.

Regards,

Marshall
