Dears,
This is the news I was waiting to see: fellow Britto Old Boy BOB Roy Vas will
now make sure that the GMC Hospital in Bambolim is at least half as clean as
INOX multiplex that his boys keep spotlessly clean.
What is the use of specialist doctors when infections are spread due to poor
sanitation and hygeine. Currently, the wards in GMC Hospital are not even half
as clean as the urinals in INOX and the toilets in GMC make a pigsty look
desirable! It is difficult to even get one's pee out at GMC ...even for
testing! ;-)
Let us look forward to a cleaner GMC Hospital. Perhaps, even the mould infested
Chest and TB sanatorium at St. Inez will receive attention. I do hope the
District Hospital in Peddem-Mapusa will open with Eco Clean [visit
www.britto-oba.com home page for details]as the inhouse sanitation agency.
There is nothing better in Goa at present.
Mog asundi.

Ecoclean outsourced to keep Government hospitals clean
HERALD REPORTER
PANJIM, SEP 24 – Following increasing complaints of unhygienic condition at
State-run hospitals, and more so at Goa Medical College (GMC) & Hospital,
Bambolim, the Government has outsourced sweeping and swabbing of hospitals,
dental college and nursing college.
The work has been outsourced to M/s Ecoclean System & Solution, Panjim.
Besides keeping GMC premises spick-and-span, the Government has agreed to give
fresh coat of paint to GMC wards and corridors, stated Joint Secretary Health
Dattaram Sardessai, in detail affidavit, filed in response to the Court
Commissioners’ report submitted to the High Court two months ago.
The Court had appointed commissioners in petition filed by one Prakash
Sardessai that highlighted poor quality of health services at Government-run
hospitals in the State.
The Commissioners’ report not only substantiated the charges made by the
petitioner but also, brought out unhealthy conditions at Government hospitals.
The report dealt in detail about insufficient staff and non –working equipment.
However, all the equipment in ICU and ICCU has been repaired and all the
machines are in working condition, now, says the affidavit. It has also decided
a new patient monitor for ICU and ICCU at GMC. Currently, in-use monitor is 15
years old, says the affidavit.
The number of obstetrics and gynecology beds has been increased from 120 to 163
in view of increasing patient load. The report had pointed out that beds in
this ward are insufficient to cater to incoming patients. As a result, delivery
patients have to wait in the corridors. But as the number of patients keeps
increasing, patients for admissions have to wait for sometime, says the
affidavit.
More linen has been purchased and air conditioning installed in various wards
of obstetrician and gynecology. Plus, the hospital gives free drugs and
medicines to patients.
The Government is also is in the process of filling vacancies in various
departments, and has justified its decision to appoint consultants on contract
basis stating it is difficult to get full-time consultant in super specialty
units. Other wise patients have to be referred out side Goa for treatment.
There are plans to strengthen the Department of Neurosurgery to impart quality
education to students registered for M Ch courses, and purchase intra-operative
C T system.
A separate Urology Department has been set up and a consultant urologist with
two surgery consultants has been appointed on honorary basis.
Modern Centralised laboratory and Yatri Niwas have been set up and EMRI (toll
free 108) has been introduced to meet emergencies.
