Built of green granite and laterite stone in 1597 by Viceroy Francisco da Gama, it is crowned by a small statue of his grandfather Vasco da Gama in full royal regalia. He faces the river Mandovi, whilst the Rua Direita rolls peacefully under the great arch into serene Old Goa.
