Alas not quite factually correct ...and not convincing to those who know the
ground realities in Goa.
The Dalgado Konknni Akademi [DKA], headed by Premanand Lotlikar, had a Writers'
workshop on Sunday that was attended by Mr. Yusuf Sheikh, Ashok Chodankar [both
from Vasco and Editors of bilingual or Konkani magazines in the Roman script],
Daniel F.D'Souza [who was awarded by both TSKK and KBM for his collection of
essays published as a book entitled "Koslich Malis Nastana"] and a large number
of college students who have studied Konkani in Devanagri script in school. The
resource person was Dr. Pratap Naik SJ, a Jesuit who is fluent in Konkani and
writes it proficiently in Roman, Devanagri and Kannada scripts. He has
conducted workshops in Kannad and Devanagri script also.
The Goan Catholics for Devanagri [GCFD], headed by Fr. Mousinho de Ataide, held
a programme on Monday in association with Adv. Uday Bhembre's Asmitai
Pratishtan to release the ENGLISH translation of Msgr. Dalgado's PORTUGUESE
introduction to his Portugeuse to Konkani and Konkani to Portuguese
dictionaries. The Chief Guest waxed eloquent about how Devanagri is
phoenetically superior to Roman script and helps one to pronounce
words correctly ...and then went on to mis-pronounce all the four important
words of the day "Monsignor Sebastiao Rodolfo Dalgado" !!
He could have written the name in Devanagri and pronounced it right, if he so
believed in it. Ditto for the name of his former colleague in the Sahitiya
Akademi, Shri Damodar Mauzo, whose name he also gleefully mis-pronounced.
In Roman script, one would simply write "Monsinvor Sebastianv Dalgad" and read
it right, first time and every time!
