Ref: Just opposing all mega projects is not the solution
The deputy speaker, Mr Mauvin Godinho said: That the gram sabha's are basically meant to express views and formulate plans for the village development and not to destroy its identity. Mr Godinho was addressing the panch members of Chicalim VP, at a meeting called to review the progress of various projects in Chicalim and also the pipeline projects. Speaking on mega projects, Mr Godinho reiterated that the people in Goa are not anti-development and they know what is good and bad for them. He said just opposing all mega projects is not the solution but, one should see that any mega projects fulfills the proper infrastructure like water and power supply, garbage disposal, sewage facility and proper roads. He said in order to raise proper awareness on nature of mega projects; the government will issue a circular to all the village panchayats, clarifying the same. Mr Anacleto D'Souza, sarpanch, deputy sarpanch, Ms Marie Mascarenhas, panch members and panchayat secretary, Mr Pradeep Tamhankar were present for the meeting. Mr Godinho, speaking on the proposed projects in Chicalim, informed that a sewage system, at joggers park are in the pipeline. He said improved roads, efficient water and electricity supply will be given greater attention. He said that he wants to make Chicalim village a model others can follow Freddy Says: Well said Mauvin, spoke like a true red and blue blooded politician !!! Goans are up from their slumber so it's bad news for you guys, because from now on you'll will have sleepless nights, the builders and the developers may not be able to contribute to your (40-chor) bulging bank accounts and luxuries. We Goans certainly know what's good for us, as it is said "one man's meat is another man's poison", so watch out, time may be running out for you guys. I would like to correct you on your statement "one should see that any mega projects fulfills the proper infrastructure like water and power supply, garbage disposal, sewage facility and proper roads" In fact the Authorities should make sure that adequate infrastructure is in place and also make sure that adequate power and water supply is provided and plan the garbage and sewerage disposal and recycling before any mega project is actually approved. What you guys have been doing is just the opposite, approve mega projects left right and centre when all basic amenities are at cross roads. In the present situation, it's self we are having crises with the state of roads and bridges in Goa, water and electricity has been a problem since liberation and has made very little head way since then, for self sufficiency. Our electricity is famous for it's "Hudini" acts, if it's on for half an hour it will disappear for hours and sometime even days in the costal villages, as for the water supply, most of the time your taps and pipes run dry ever second day. Garbage is a mountain of crises at "sonsdo" at the moment, and did you say sewerage system ? Have you politicians heard of some thing called sewerage network and reprocessing system actually ? I am surprised. You guys have been visiting different countries at our expenses, haven't you all noticed the monumental changes around, let me give you an example, I am in no way unaware of the vast gulf of financial resources between Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Goa, but what I want to stress is the way development is actually conceptualized and made a reality. Like you (our politicians) they don't think of today or tomorrow but generation next or may be two generations next, the network of roads and bridges, the water and sewerage network, the electricity supply are taken care of even before the projects are started so that there is no burden on the basic amenities once the projects are completed, our politicians should learn from them. You can very well imagine what our Goa's state will be if planning is kept for latter rather than before. If one goes with history, when our politicians say later, it means never. Mauvin and his comrades should know what it means by "swallow only as much as your stomach can take" or else you could choke yourself to death.
