Why was Bush missing from McCain's convention? And why does the latter
avoid any mention of the president in a positive way in his campaign
speeches?

Bush was scheduled to speak at the convention but canceled to focus security
attention on the incoming Hurricane Gustave. Instead, the President address
the convention by video and endorsed McCain.

Future US President Bobby Jindal was also scheduled to speak at the convention
and cancelled for the same reason.

Again, I reject your premise. McCain does not avoid mentioning Bush when there
is a point to be made by mentioning him. However, the Bush presidency is
almost over and McCain wants to talk about what he wants to do.
