Dear Freddy,
Thanks for writing. I am happy someone else too have these wonderful memories.
And surely many others who experienced these would be glad. Those were the most
simple, genuine, realistic, accomadative moments.
You made me feel rightly that it is indeed death anniversary. Probably a
silver death anniversary. Because most of all those things listed have been
buried. My sympathies and condolences. I understand the loss of something which
we loved & enjoyed.
But today there are many who do not and will not love all which you listed,
since they seems to have been already brain washed by the so called
infrastructues heading towards the sky by cutting hills, destroying fields,
reducing beach lines; easy access to accelarate on fast lane of death, dialing
and connecting to easy ways and means, easy hot cooking, immediate cooling
units, etc. They call it Development. Invention. They live in a BUSY world.
Busy under Satans Yoke.
We had and will have faith in whom we did not see.
Today people believe in that which tickles their egos, pride, ownership. They
call it Society Status. And they will open their eyes, ears, hearts to heavens
only after a Financial, Natural, enviornmental, tsunami strikes.
Only then will they realise and admire THE CREATOR. THE CREATOR WHO CREATED US
TO ENJOY HIS KINGDOM. We should continue to enjoy HIS creations as much as we
can and BE HAPPY.
Wishing you good health and continue to enjoy the childhoodworld, whenever it
is possible. And we must speak up whenever and wherever situation demands so
that nature and environment atleast can be treasured & preserved.
Regards
Mario

Childhood without the goodies of today ? As kids, I and my village friends grew
up during the 60's, in a costal villagewith plenty of mud and send to play in,
and coconut trees for shade all aroundand the fresh salty sea breeze and fresh
spring water for refreshments. We called on friends to come out to play, never
rang the doorbell (noelectricity), just went around the back, whistled and
yelled. We played footballbare feet, on rocky ground with stones a plenty, at
the end of the game, moreoften than not, ended up with bleeding feet, scraped
fore arms and bloody knees, when there was free time we also played "satoleo "or
"gimo" "kabaddi" hide andseek, cops and robbers, "barani" (geeli danda) among
others, often cycles fromthe other villages would be hired and mastered,
cycling was like a breath offresh air, no safety helmets, knee pads or elbow
pads, with plenty of cardboardsbetween spokes to make it sound like a
motorbike, we were fearless on our bikeseven when the brakes failed going
downhill, we were showing off how tough wewere, by how high we could climb and
jump down. It was great fun. When thirstywe only drank fresh water from the
springs or drew water from the well close by,bottled water was still a mystery,
we lost teeth, broke arms, we got cuts andbruises and bloody noses, nobody
complained as we had so much fun, it wasn'tanybody's fault, only ours, most of
the time no injuries were reported homeunless serious, after bathing ourselves
with sea water and then fresh waterfrom the spring with the help of red block
of lifebuoy soap, with hair ever sorough, shampoos were no existent. When ever
the heat got to us in the house astroll in the open would cool us down, AC's
what ?? did not exist at all. We ate everything in sight, bread (four
cornered), "kanknam" (circular bangleshaped) BTW we still get those in our
village, if we ran out of flour forchappaties, chocolates, sugary sweets, at
mid day "pez" (canjie) with thickcoconut curry of the previous day and water
pickle mangoes was mandatory, wesometimes picked chickoos, zamblam, love apples
and even custard apples fromneighbours or our own gardens, when the old slept
in the afternoons. When evercaught, were made to kneel outside the doorstep, in
the evenings we mostly had"tizan" made from "nasne" and coconut juice or
"golshem"/ "konn" made of "mung",rice and coconut and didn't even hear about
burgers, pastas, pizzas or otherfast foods, yet, we ate and we played and
stayed healthy and happy. We kept busycollecting bits and pieces so we could
build all sort of things and we couldstay out to play for hours, as long as we
got back before dark, before the"Angelous bell" of our Chapel rang , in time
for Rosary and dinner. We had no mobile phones, Play Stations, MP3, I-Pods,
Video games, 99 Cable TVchannels, DVD's, Home Cinema, Mobile phones, Home
Computers, Laptops,Chat-rooms, Internet, no discos, no motorcycles, no BMW or
other cars with hi-fimusic systems, to take girls out on dates etc ... BUT, we
had REAL FRIENDS!!!!and we always managed to find each other. How ? No one
knows If caught at mischief a glare from Mum was all that was needed to
straighten usout, or as I remember a number of instances very vividly, when Mom
use to comewith the one of the framed pictures of Sacred Heart of Jesus or
Mother Mary andtell me "don't lie, see, Jesus or Mother Mary is looking at you
all the time andwhere ever you go" and ask me to go to any corner of the room
and hell !!! thepicture would still be looking at me, and that was enough for
me to sometimewet my pants, such was the innocence at that time, this did work
on my kids too,but surely not as long as it had worked on me. I still joke
about it with mykids and have a good laugh. As kids, each one of us had our own
chores to do athome and we did it before we went to play. The only form of
entertainment was listening to the old Philips radio, everyafternoon without
fail "kandlam Onvllam" and on Sunday and Thursday evenings"Manazoktim Gitam"
and ofcourse the "khell tiatr" on Sunday night, twice amonth. People who did
not have a radio would gather at the "vangonn" (smallcircular open place in
front of the house) of the neighbour who had a radio andsit there joking with
each other and often watch the females with tears in theireyes, if the play was
emotional. It was good to see all the neighbours togetherin a friendly
atmostphere. Those were nostalgic days At night with one kerosene lamp in
each room the house looked full of light andlife, electricity was still far a
way available in cities only, the whole household would sit on the floor and in
one room and with just one lamp everyonehappily feasting on the home grown rice
and veg and plenty of fish from the seaclose by, beef, mutton and home bred
chicken and pork was a luxury reserved foroccasions only, with no electricity
there were no fridges or coolers and nofans. Today when ever the electricity
does the "Huddini act" while at supper, onthe table, even if you light ten
candles you just can't see what's in the plate!! During the months of April
and May most of us, use to sleep in the "vangonn" onplain weed mats and a
pillow, the people who slept in the house would mostly doso at the entrance,
would leave the doors and windows open for the breeze toflow through, without
any worry of theft or robbery or rape for that matter, itwas wonderful to sleep
out with nature hovering over you, stars twinkling, theconstant chirping of the
crickets and an occasional hoot of the owl did notdisturb the ambience at all,
the occasional shooting star zooming by had most ofus making wishes and often
asking each other of the wishes made, such innocence. In the moonlight, could
see all the clouds moving in one direction and when themoon was not around,
slightly scared getting as close as possible to the personnext to you without
any ill intent or malice. Sometimes we sang the old folkssongs but mostly we
were told stories some true, and some fairy tales, but westill believed in all
those tales narrated by our elders, before we fell asleep. In the morning
getting up to the twittering of the birds and the sun raysthrough the thick
shrubs and trees around looked like multi coloured lightscoming from the sky.
Oh God I do miss those days. The most important things that were taught
during our young days were, betruthful, respectful, obedient and to love and
fear God, We had freedom (limited), success, disappointments and
responsibilities butstill we enjoyed and remained happy with what we had and
became responsible menand still remained obedient and respectful to our parents
and our elders. Suchwere the days - HAPPY DAYS INDEED !!! In my life I have
learnt one very important thing and that is, "in respectingothers, you gain
respect yourself". Can we say the same for today, with all the advancement in
science andtechnology ? Are they respectful ? Are they obedient ? And most of
all are theyreally happy ? Freddy Agnelo
