Floriano,

What you don't know is that I am a huge fan of what you are trying to do in
Goa, against overwhelming odds. If I could make you Goa Chief Minister I would
do so in a heartbeat - of course in exchange for home-made feni and sorpotel
for life. As a person of simple tastes that's all I ask:-))
>
All I wanted to do in my response was a) correct some obvious mis-stated facts,
and b) put some context and perspective on your euphoria.
>
There is no question that this was a great event in American history, and a
testament to its people and a rebuke to its critics, yet another smooth and
seamless change in power in the world's most diverse, dynamic and powerful
country.
>
It is also a tribute to Barack Obama who was able to overcome odds that others
of his race have been unable to overcome, which will, I hope uplift many of
them from the possibilities I hope they see for themselves and their children.
>
Surprisingly, my biggest regret was not that Obama had won, but that his old
white Grandmother died the day before the election, without experiencing the
slice of American history that she had made possible, by bringing him up when
his parents were not around. Not only that, this intrepid woman rose to become
Vice President of a bank with only a high school diploma. She was truly a
heroic American woman.
>
However, Obama can also harm his people if he succumbs to the tendencises he
displayed during the campaign, which, in effect, are empty promises that are
tantamount to vote bank politics.
>
Those African-Americans who now think they do not have to worry about paying
for gas or their mortgage anymore, in the words of one of his supporters,
because he will take care of her, will not be well served.
>
I hope the fever that you saw was a temporary euphoria at the history that was
being made, and not rich fuel for demagoguery in the future.

All that I have been hinting at is that Goa must experience a similar
electrically charged atmosphere during the next Goa's Assembly elections.

I hope you can electrify the Goan electorate, which has shown no signs of being
electrified in the right direction so far, and continue to re-elect the same
old reprobates.

In any case, even if the Republicans wanted to have a grip on Obama's
winning streak, they couldn't.

I'm not sure I agree with that, because, unfortunately John McCain was a
fatally flawed candidate from a conservative perspective, we held our noses
while supporting him because he has some key philosophies that were pretty
close to Obama's.
>
Here is what one American commentator had to say, in part:
>
Quote:
Republicans lost this presidential election, and I don't blame the
messenger; I blame the message. How could Republicans go after Obama on
planning to bankrupt the coal companies when McCain supports the exact same cap
and trade policies and earnestly believes in global warming?
>
How could we go after Obama for his illegal alien aunt and for supporting
driver's licenses for illegal aliens when McCain fanatically pushed amnesty
along with his good friend Teddy Kennedy?
>
How could we go after Obama for Jeremiah Wright when McCain denounced any
Republicans who did so?
>
How could we go after Obama for planning to hike taxes on the "rich,"
when McCain was the only Republican to vote against both of Bush's tax cuts
on the grounds that they were tax cuts for the rich?
>
And why should Republican activists slave away working for McCain when he has
personally, viciously attacked conservative activists and leaders, various
conservative talk radio hosts, the Tennessee Republican Party and on and on and
on?
>
How many times do we have to run this experiment before Republican primary
voters learn that "moderate," "independent," "maverick" Republicans never win,
and right-wing Republicans never lose?
Unquote.
>
Finally, here is what one of the new leaders of the Reagan-conservatives and, I
believe, a future US President, Bobby Jindal, had to say the day after the
election in analysing what the Republicans need to do:
