Book reveals hidden black and Asian history of Bexley

A NEW book has been launched revealing the hidden black and Asian history of
Bexley.

The publication, A View from Shooters Hill, is by historian Cliff Pereira, 48,
who lives in Welling.

It grew out of the work Mr Pereira did last year for the hugely successful
touring exhibition which revealed the borough’s connections to the
transatlantic slave trade, forged through the owners of Bexley’s grand country
houses.

The book was launched by Bexley’s mayor, Councillor Nick O’Hare, at an event to
celebrate Black History Month.

Mr Pereira said the book was the product of eight years work on projects
including oral histories collected from Bexley communities and the slavery
exhibition.

He says it was the people who heard his talks and were involved in his projects
who pressed him to write the book and it was the borough’s ethnic community
groups who paid to have it printed.

It took nine months to put together and is now available in libraries and a
copy will be delivered to every borough school.

Mr Pereira said: “I hope schools will use it in a wider context, as part of
local history, not just black history.”

The event, in Roberts Hall, off Bexleyheath Broadway, was organised by Bexley
African Caribbean Community Association (BACCA) and featured poetry readings,
songs and dance.

Lux Anandarajah, director of Bexley Council for Racial Equality, reminded the
audience America’s president-elect and the new Formula 1 world champion are
both black.

He said: “Anyone, given the right environment and opportunity, will excel in
any field, including leadership in politics.

“Let this be an example for our young people that attainment and achievements
have no barriers.”

The book, which was produced for BACCA, is not on general sale, but copies can
be obtained, with a donation of at least £5, from [EMAIL PROTECTED] And it is
still possible to arrange for the exhibition to visit schools and groups in the
borough.
