Dear Dr Barad,
Over the years I have noticed that you have become ever so vocal in your
comments always tethering on communal ill-will. There is a debate in society at
the moment whether the actions of a few can be blamed on the whole community.
On the face of it, the actions of a few misguided men or women who take up arms
and attack other human beings cannot be blamed on the entire community. There
is however a larger and more profound responsibility society bears and that is
how our individual conservations and opinions shape the collective thought of
the country. What are the conversations we have in our homes, our mosques, our
temples, our churches, our schools, our offices, our friends over bhajas and
chai. Are they filled with hatred for fellow human-beings who happen to be of a
different faith? All these conservations ultimately shape the ideology of
extremists and to that extent we are all responsible in what we say. Then, we
cannot stand-by and say but it wasn't me who did the killing, it was some
fringe group. No, it was our collective dialogue and censor or lack of censor
that emboldened and gave wings to these lunatics that feed off the sort of
misinformation and propaganda that
comes from the mouths of seeming moderates.
Whether we are Muslim, Hindus or Christians, as a society we better all grow-up
very fast and introspective deeply on how we have shaped our communities. That
is the only way forward for India.
best,
selma
