«1Oth Anniversary of the handing over of the Nobel Prize to José Saramago»
On the10th of December, on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the handing
over of the Nobel Prize to José Saramago, the Centro de Lingua e Cultura
Portuguesas of Chowgule College and the Centro de Lingua Portuguesa of
Instituto Camões in Panjim will organize a talk entitled Before and After the
Nobel Prize A Cronobiography on José Saramago by Delfim Correia da Silva,
head of Instituto Camões in Goa, followed by the screening of the film A
Jangada de Pedra (The Stone Raft / 2002), based on the novel by the same
author.
José Saramago, at 86 years of age, after struggling through an illness has
recently released a new novel A viagem do Elefante(The Journey of the
Elephant), a narrative in his unmistakable style, directed towards a social,
political and religious critique, where real and fictitious characters unfold
themselves. This novel comes 10 years after he was awarded the Nobel Prize in
Literature, the first ever given to a writer of a Portuguese speaking country.
Some of his most famous novels were adapted to operas and plays and two to
cinema, Blindness (2008) which was recently screened at the 39th IFFI, Goa, and
The Stone Raft (2002) of George Sluizer, subtitles in Portuguese, 107 min.
color.
In The Stone Raft, an allegorical novel, Saramago tries to define his position
regarding the integration of Portugal and Spain into the European Union..
It will be screened at the Chowgule College Auditorium, on 10th December 2008,
at 5.00 p.m.
Synopsis: Besides astonishing incidents lived by a group of people who come to
know one another by chance (or perhaps not), an unexplainable geological
occurrence separates the Iberian Peninsula from the rest of the Continent,
letting it drift in the Atlantic Ocean half way between America and the Europe.
