K'taka diverting Mhadei water, alleges MBA HERALD REPORTER PANJIM, DEC 14 The Mhadei Bachao Abhiyan (MBA) today alleged that the Karnataka Government is continuing with the Mhadei water diversion at Kankumbi against the direction of the Supreme Court. MBA convenor Nirmala Sawant, who earlier in the day conducted a site visit at Kankumbi, told Herald that the work is on round-the-clock at the basin. 'What we saw there was shocking they have engaged four excavators on the site while the labourers were busy cutting trees and cleaning the area,' Mrs Sawant claimed adding 'the have dug the nullahs so deep and even broadened the basin so that water can be diverted.' In the process, she said, they have also destroyed the forest area and the fields. 'Some of the villagers whom we spoke to claimed that the work started long back and is on round-the-clock,' she said. The people also complained that since the start of the work the water table in the village wells had gone down, the former Congress legislator said. 'This work is on despite the Supreme Court directions to stop work,' she maintained. Goa's case would be heard by the Apex Court on January 15 but Sawant says the MBA will intimate their lawyer on the developments and also bring it to the notice of the SC.
