What Can We Offer Goa ? Honour promises to Goa - Zino Carvalho, Davorlim - 17-Dec-2008
"We are completing 47 years of Goa's liberation. Goans sincerely hope that the central government remove the anguish and bring back the glow of happiness to the eyes of Goans by granting special status to Goa. The people of Goa are finding themselves strangers in their own land and the time has come to put a full stop to the increase in population, as Goa does not have the carrying capacity for a huge influx. Our scant land resources cannot bear the burden of migrant influx. The populace in the local villages surrounding the slums is outnumbered by the migrants. Goa's scenic beauty is lost to a concrete jungle. Pressure on the existing infrastructure, and lack of amenities like water, sewerage, electricity and garbage disposal sites are alarming problems. Goans were not part of the Constituent Assembly deliberations. Our land was liberated through military intervention, giving us some assurances, and these promises should be honoured". Reference to the above article on Herald, I am sure a lot of us have heard it over and over again on this forum and on the outside as well, I even heard a group of people in debate out side St. Mary's Church, Dubai last Friday, it indeed made me feel elated for a minute and deflated the next. Elated for knowing a lot of people are aware of the traumatic phase Goa and Goans are going through, it sure looks like Goans are riding the adrenaline rush for a better Goa and for a Goan Goa, the numerous articles, the meetings, the agitations, the arrests, the fight against the brute force of the police against peaceful protesters, the signature campaigns and above all, the feeling that Aam Aadmi has finally realized that he has been taken for a jolly good ride by our good for nothing "chaa - kaas" Netas But on second thoughts I was deflated, is this going to be like periodic declarations of false pregnancy and false hopes ? How long have we known these facts ? Or How much longer will we sleep on these facts and just keep talking the talk and not walking the walk ? Are we going to keep on bickering, whether Goa's freedom was a conquest, inquisition or liberation or even transition for that matter ? Or whether Obama will be able to liberate America and the rest of the world from the "black whole of economic disaster" or bring hope, good will and Peace to the world that "cyclone BUSH" in all his ferocity had devastated ? Or the on going war of words between Marshall, Samir and Santosh and of course Dr Barad adding "adverse composite flavour" to the already communal stench ? Is it all so necessary compared to the urgency required to be one minded and the unity required to save Goa from becoming an aborted womb where in lie the bloody remains of our own malicious schemes, greed and hatred ? Is every Goan who talks about it, ready to do something about it ? Or are we willing to wait till Mr. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi takes a rebirth in Goa ? If so, it's sure going to be a long long wait for kingdom come. At this point in time, the Parable of the sower, from the Bible comes to mind, where are all the seeds falling ? I only hope and pray that they don't fall on the path, among thorns or on rocky ground but on good soil, so that we accept our faults and feel sorry and not repeat them and seek redemption by our strong positive action, hope I am not sounding like priest giving a Sunday "homely". It is imperative that we look within ourselves and see where we stand with regard to Goa and Goans because what we need is a development and secular-based governance which displays dexterity, very strong teeth and even stronger will to correct the aberration caused and work towards making the dreams of EVERY TRUE GOAN a reality. This is what we should offer Goa, to Save Goa from this utterly aghast ground zero reality ? The question is, are we ready to WALK the WALK ?
