Panaji, Dec 17: A controversy has erupted over a verification drive at a
madrassa in Vasco town as a Muslim group demanded suspension of police
officials accusing them of "misbehaving" with girl students.
"We demand that Deputy Superintendent of Police Deu Banaulikar and Police
Inspector Harish Madkaikar be immediately suspended as they misbehaved and
ill-treated the girls at Madrassa," Tahir Karol, president of Association of
All Goa Muslim Jamaats (AAGMJ) told reporters in Panaji.
Police had on Tuesday reportedly rounded up 88 teenage girls from the madrassa
and taken them to the police station to verify their credentials.
The madrassa management, however, claimed that they had been furnishing all the
required details to the police on a regular basis.
"They (police) checked the entire premises but could not find anything
objectionable," Karol said.
Karol said the madrassa is a 'Darul Uloom' where students are taught various
languages.
"This is an all girls’ school in Vasco where orphan and poor girls study. Of
them, 60 percent are Goans while rest of the 40 percent are from Karnataka," he
said.
