Dear Godfrey, It is universally accepted that Digamber Kamat has done more for Konkani in the Roman script during the last 18 months in office than Pratapsingh Rane, Dr. Wilfred de Souza, Luizinho Faleiro, Francisco Sardinha and Manohar Parrikar have done during their terms in office as CM.
However, during his term as Education Minister in Rane's cabinet, Luizinho has freed the candidates who have studied Konkani in school from the burden of getting tested by the GKA for proficiency in Konkani, something that allegedly kept the Director of Education from getting posted on regular basis [as against ad hoc appointment] Digamber has listed what he has done for Konkani in the Roman script today. Let us see what the "Anj Bhoddvo" has to say about his actions tomorrow. A single page supplement in the "Pudari" today is little comfort. Will a supporter of the Roman script make it to the President's post in the Goa Konkani Akademi for the first time since its formation ...or will the Roman script protagonists be stuck with a position in the Tiatr Akademi? Mauvin Godinho not turning up for the event that was fixed well in advance is a shame ...specially because the CM came. I do not think people will forget this in a hurry. Can all the MLAs who support Konkai in the Roman script put up their hands in the State Assembly? Or will this issue need to come up through Gram Sabha resolutions in the Panchayats , a process that may well tear the state apart? The interests are the same ... the builders and the mine lease holders are the one's who support "Devanagri only" for Konkani or prefer English in the Roman script or, increasingly, the roll of the dice in the Casino ships on the Mandovi ...while they target Babush Monserrate to dissipate the public anger.
