Dear Mr Mulquiney,

RE: THE COVER OF THE SPICEJET IN-FLIGHT MAGAZINE

Before your trash this email as yet another angry, misguided letter from those
parochial Goans, who call anyone on the wrong side of the Karwar border,
"bhaile", let me hastily assure you I am not one of those Goans.

Infact, as Goans go, I'm quite an embarrassment to my tribe. I realise that
hordes of people must descend on Goa every year with scant civic or
environmental responsibility, inorder to bolster our tourist industry. I've
even come to terms with the fact that five-star hotels will build in
contravention of our Coastal Zoning Regulation, because afterall our polity
have promised them our Goan first-born in return for a little mullah under the
table. All this I understand must take place to churn the wheels of
capitalistic lust.

But I do draw the line at having to give up my ethnicity so that our tourism
industry can be milked for all its worth. Now, let me quickly explain something
about ethnicity. Being Arab is an ethnic identity. Within that there are
subsections. So you can't really put an Arabian Peninsular Arab in downtown
Beirut if you want to showcase the cafes of Lebanon. Nor can you have an
Algerian standing infront of a wind-tower and pass it off as accurately
portraying Arabia. You see, we Goans don't have much left. So we've begun to
cling rather tenaciously to what little we do have, our self-respect.

I realise it's too late to burn all those glossy copies of the spice-jet
in-flight magazine but a simple apology will suffice.

Best regards,
Selma Carvalho
